Colegas: nuestro PEN-CLUB pide la solidaridad de ustedes para lograr que
las autoridades cubanas le permitan al joven escritor y bloguero Ángel
Santiestaban Prats abandonar Cuba para recibir tratamiento médico. Santiesteban
Prats está padeciendo de cáncer y no está recibiendo la atención adecuada.
Conocemos que es práctica habitual del régimen castrista no facilitarle a
opositores pacíficos la atención médica requerida. Santiesteban Prats no sería
el primero ni el último disidente pacifico en morir en la Isla por falta de
atención. En ocasiones la salida es autorizada cuando la persona ya se
encuentra en estado agónico.
Recordemos que Ángel Santiesteban Prats es un reconocido y laureado autor
cubano, graduado en dirección de cine y autor de obras premiadas, nacional e
internacionalmente como: Sueño de un día de verano, premio
UNEC 1995. Los hijos que nadie quiso, premio Alejo Carpentier
2001. Asimismo de la obra Sur: latitud 13 y Dichoso
los que lloran, premio Casa de Las Américas, 2006. Además ha sido mención
del premio Juan Rulfo de Radio Francia Internacional en 1989 y merecedor del
premio Cesar Galeano en año 1999.
Disgustado con la política cultural y totalitaria imperante en Cuba
comenzó, siempre de manera pacífica, a criticar lo que entendía estaba mal
hecho. Por entonces se convirtió, 2008, en autor del blog
informativo: Los hijos de nadie, motivo por el cual la Seguridad
del Estado comienza a acosarlo hasta que bajo cargos inventados de: Violencia
domestica y violación de morada es condenado, en diciembre de 2012, a
cinco año de cárcel. Por presiones internacionales, incluyendo denuncias de
nuestro PEN-CLUB, es liberado el 17 de julio de 2015 tras haber pasado más de
dos años en prisión. Al salir de la cárcel denunció que fue sometido a torturas
sicológicas y que sufrió abuso físico.
En julio de 2014 su hijo, Eduardo Ángel Santiesteban afirmó en una
entrevista a Televisión Martí, ciudad de Miami, que fue obligado a
declarar contra su padre y que Ángel Santiesteban Prats nunca había agredido a
su ex esposa.
En la actualidad vive bajo acoso y vigilancia constante, siendo frecuente
las detenciones de corta duración, durante las cuales se le insulta e intimida.
Su situación es precaria y de día en día empeora, ya que desde que rompió
con el régimen y su política cultural se le niega el derecho al trabajo y otro
servicio básicos. Debe su precario sustento a familiares y amigos que desde el
exterior, siempre que se puede, le envían algunos recursos de sobrevivencia.

FROM THE PEN CLUB OF CUBAN WRITERS IN EXILE TO THE PEN
INTERNATIONAL AND PEN CENTRES AROUND THE WORLD AND IN LATIN AMERICA.
Colleagues: our PEN-CLUB asks
for your solidarity to achieve that the Cuban authorities allow young writer
and blogger Ángel Santiestaban Prats to leave Cuba to receive medical
treatment. Santiesteban Prats is stricken with cancer and is not
receiving adecuate attention.
We are aware that it is common
practice for the Castro regime to not allow members of the peaceful opposition
to obtain necessary medical attention. Santiesteban Prats will not be the first
nor the last peaceful dissident to die in the Island due to lack of medical
attention. On occasion, permission to leave the country is granted when a
person is already agonizing.
We should recall that Ángel
Santiesteban Prats is a renowned and lauded Cuban autor, a graduate in film
directing and the author of national and international award-winning works
like: Sueño de un día de verano, 1995 UNEC Prize. Los hijos que nadie quiso, 2001 Alejo Carpentier Prize. As well
as his works Sur: latitud 13 and Dichoso los que
lloran, 2006 Casa de Las Américas Prize. He has also received a
mention from Radio France International’s Juan Rulfo Award in 1989 and the
Cesar Galeano Award in 1999.
Upset with the cultural and
totalitarian policies in place in Cuba, he began, always peacefully, to speak
out against what he believed to be wrong. It was then that he bécame, in 2008,
the author of the informational blog: Los hijos de nadie, for which
State Security began to harrass him until, under the trumped-up charges
of: Domestic violence and breaking and entering he
was sentenced, in December 2012 to five years in prison. Due to international
pressures, including denunciations from our PEN-Club, he was released on July
17, 2015 after spending more than two years in prison. Upon leaving prison he
denounced that he was subjected to psychological tortures and that he suffered
physical abuse.
In July 2014 his son, Eduardo
Ángel Santiesteban affirmed during an interview on Televisión Martí,
in Miami, that he was forced to testify against his father and that Ángel
Santiesteban Prats never battered his ex wife.
Currently, he lives under
constant harrassment and vigilance, frequently being detained for short periods
of time, during which he is insulted and intimidated.
His situation is precarious and
worsens from day to day, since after breaking with the regime and its political
culture he has been denied the right to work and to receive other basic
services. He receives his precarious aid from family and friends living abroad
who send him some basic resources when possible.
